Christine Haas Wins Top Prize

Asmita Kumar Wins Discovery Channel's Space Camp Award

(October 23, 2002) - The top prize in the Fourth Annual Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge has been awarded to Christine Haas, 14, from Sanger, Fresno County. Christine produced her winning project while a student at Reyburn Intermediate School in Clovis, Fresno County. Accompanying her First Place award is a $15,000 scholarship and the title of "America's Top Young Scientist of the Year." Christine's project was chosen from among 40 finalists who were in turn selected from 1,764 entrants this year hailing from 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

The Discovery Science Channel "Space Camp" Award was also awarded to a California State Science Fair participant, Asmita Kumar, 14, from Goleta, Santa Barbara County. Asmita produced her winning project while a student at Goleta Valley Junior High School. Asmita won the opportunity to attend a five day camp in Summer 2003 at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.

The DCYSC is a national science competition for students in grades 5-8 created by the Discovery Channel (Discover Communications, Inc., DCI) and Science Service to encourage the exploration, understanding, and communication of science among the next generation of America's youth.
