The award citation for Anna K. Simpson at the Awards Ceremony reads:

The Student of the Year award represents more than just academic excellence. The Student of the Year is also a well-rounded individual who performs community service, has interests and hobbies outside of science, and is someone who shows leadership to their peers. This year’s winner embodies all of this and more.

Our Student of the Year has earned awards in math, science and overall academic excellence at the local, state and national levels. This student takes on leadership roles in the Math, Robotics, Science Fair and Science Olympiad clubs; serves as a high school tutor in math and science; and mentors middle school students in robotics and music. Our recipient has conducted research at the University of San Diego and participated of the Research Science Institute at MIT last summer.

Our recipient believes that scientists should be able to communicate their research to the general public in order to be able to help our community; and also feels strongly about serving as a science mentor for young women who want to get into the field. Our recipient spends spare time reading and enjoying music, and is the principal flute on the East County Youth Symphony and teaches younger musicians. This student is always willing to learn new things that can broaden boundaries. All this is on top of maintaining a 4.79 grade point average that qualified to win the Salutatorian Award.

Please join me in applauding our 2010 Student of the Year — from Patrick Henry High School in San Diego — Anna K. Simpson!
