The award citation at the Awards Ceremony reads:

This year’s Teacher of the Year has been described as a leader in the school and the students’ number one encourager and advocate. He is involved in multiple science competitions, from Science Olympiad to the Intel Science and Engineering Fair.

By instituting a peer mentoring program between students that have been to the State Science Fair and those who are new to the science fair process, he continues to grow the school’s science fair program by encouraging and supporting younger students. One of the best experiences for this teacher is seeing students participate in the Science Fair over multiple years because they want to do it.

When asked about his personal philosophy about science education, this teacher emphasizes the importance of inspiring students to see how science is connected to everyday life. He encourages students to get involved with summer research opportunities, and works to connect them with professors at nearby universities. At school functions, this teacher strives to give recognition in science the same importance as in the arts and athletics.

Please join me in congratulating our Senior Division Teacher of the Year — from University High School in Irvine, Orange County — David Knight!
